Sliding Door Key

A consideration of every product design is the pleasure of the end user. A key is an often-overlooked component of a door or window. Before BAU2023 the team for the AS PD 75 architectural sliding door was asked to provide a new key for the premium product, so they approached Etcetera. The limited edition key is 3D printed from recycled aluminum, CNC post processed, and polished to a chrome-like finish.

More about the project…

As the Schüco team was reviewing their products ahead of BAU2023, they had the feeling that a part of the customer experience for their top-of-the-line sliding door was missing. There was no unique key for one of the best sliding doors on the market. We couldn’t redesign the key and lock themselves but adapted the key with an integrated holder and cap meant to bring pleasure to the simple act of locking the door to your patio or balcony. To do so we were thinking about contemporary car keys (when they still have them), which are less keys than they are ergonomic, branded smart boxes with a couple of buttons and specific electronics. While this key still has a unique, security based form, nowadays keys are valuable not for how they fit in a lock, but how they fit in your hand and the specific hard and software that they contain. The key is now an essential component or each new product that we develop with Schüco.
