Basajaun Fair Stand

The Basajaun project was highlighted at the 2023 Woodrise exhibition and conference. The fair stand is designed for the presentation of the project and its many innovations using materials from the project itself, and 3 concepts closely linked to the project itself and the effort to create more responsibility in the construction industry: design for disassembly, using bio-based materials, and reuse.

Client: Basajaun Project

The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no. 862942 from 2019-2023.

We used renewable, bio-based materials that act as a carbon sink and can be more easily recycled, thus they offer considerable sustainability opportunities compared to traditional ones.

Designing for disassembly means that the materials can be reused and more easily recycled, extending their life cycle. We used as few mechanical connections as possible and maintained standard sizes of the SIPs and glulam used. Designing for disassembly is a key method that we incorporate into our products, systems, and spaces to make them flexible, reusable, and more easily recycled. Not only that, the stand had to be built in less than 2 days and dismantled in several hours, so designing for disassembly was essential for simply getting the job done on time.

Most of the components in the stand are from re-used materials and all of the materials were reused or recycled at the end of the fair.. The SIP wall panels were already reclaimed from the Basajaun demonstration building site will be turned into stools by the original fabricator. The glulam beams and furniture are planned to be reused as a pavilion. Even the labels for the exhibits are made from cardboard leftover from their own packaging.

The Basajaun Project - Sustainable wood construction for rural development and urban transformation.

Basajaun is a major European innovation action about sustainable building with wood. The main objective is to demonstrate how wood construction chains can be optimized to foster both rural development and urban transformation whilst being connected with sustainable forest management in Europe.
