Grid2Shell - Campus Installation
The exhibit that was originally designed for BAU 2023 was installed on the Schüco campus in spring of 2024. Truly the best reuse of an industry fair exhibit, it’s nestled perfectly against the edge of the reflecting pool between the new Welcome Forum and Schüco One buildings. People at the Schüco campus use it now as a pavilion for a cup of coffee with a colleague, afterwork celebrations, and of course, as an example of one of their most exciting products.

More about the project…
The Grid2Shell exhibit at BAU 2023 was such a success that Schüco management decided to install it on their campus. So often industry fairs are a terribly wasteful affair. So much material thrown away. And exhibits, if they’re not also thrown away, are placed in permanent storage and don’t retain any kind of value beyond their first 5-day use. Etcetera and Schüco are making an effort to change that. The Grid2Shell is one of the first steps in that direction. It has been completely reused (down to the supporting anchors), and essentially been given more value in its current position. It stands as a larger symbol of the ambitions of Schüco and will be in use for much longer as a sculptural pavilion than would ever have been in showroom let alone a fair.
For the campus installation the shell was completed glazed and sealed, so it works perfectly as a pavilion protecting visitors from the sun or the rain. It sits so comfortably in next to the pool in the new landscaping that everyone remarks that it looks as if it was always meant to be there. We couldn’t be happier with the result nor more proud to help Schüco along in their journey.
The journey of this piece is a great example of one of our first principles: that design can drive technological and economic progress for a company. Initially, there was innovation in the details and process for the novel assembly of a current product. That became a smash marketing success at the world’s largest building trade fair. And, finally, a jewel in the crown of a campus renovation sitting as a public symbol of progress.
